Alter Ego - photo exhibition by Melissa Scholten

Thursday August 26th Alter Ego vernissage at the Trouw building, Amsterdam.

100 portraits of graffiti writers in their daily life, photographed in their homes, with their kids, at their jobs or at a location important to them. Graffiti writers who's main playground used to be or still is the city of Amsterdam.

Most portraits reveal the writer's story or personality, without mentioning the name they are known for by the public or in the scene. Spectators will be surprised about the variety of people who write or wrote graffiti: meet punk rockers from the 70's, a thai box champion, the everage dutch father of two, the cook, the famous graphic designer, the beer drinking bar guest, the ajax fan, the bar owner, the CEO chauffeur or the ex junkie.

The show runs until September 5th. The catalog a must have for graffiti book collectors.

Here some photo's of the exhibition's opening night. Too bad the owner of the venue shut the party down very early because of some tagging inside.

A tour at the Bijlmer Park: work in progress.

A little surprise reached my mailbox the other day: an invitation for a tour around the Bijlmer Park, to see the make over in progress for ourselves.

The Bijlmer Park was built in the early 70's. The soil is swampy and the park started to drench over the decennia. Maintainance was expensive and a big part of the park wildened during the 80's and 90's. Which made it special: I'd never seen such wild nature anywhere else in an urban area. The pheasants, the smell of blossom in spring, the smell of forest after a rainy morning: the bicycle ride from home to the studio was always a pleasure.
For a picnic, BBQ or any other way of chilling, the Bijlmer Park was never the right park. Two prominent reasons. The soil was alway moist, even in summer, so one could not just go sit down in the grass and read a book. Junkies and homeless folks were hanging out and running bussiness all over the place.

When the city department decided to give the park a total make over, it was painful at first: 8500 trees (!) had to make way for the unknown new. I shall never forget the sight of the park after the lumbering. It looked like a war zone. The sawed trees piled up along the Karspeldreef as the war's victims. I remember feeling very depressed about this until I received a flyer with the plans for the new park.  Absolutely stunning!

A family park, with lots of playground for young and old, sports facilities, a tea house, art, nature, facilities for special animal species like ice birds and swallows, ponds with small fish for kids to discover and or catch, and more.  For more information check the Bijlmer Park website here.

Now you understand why I would not miss the opportunity to see the developments in the new park with my own eyes!

I was impressed by what was shown to us. Every detail in the park has a story or an idea behind it. It looks like budget was hardly an issue. If the park turns out the way they planned it, I will definately frequent it often. The new Bijlmer Park is evidence of the hard work of the local politicians and the love they have for this part of Amsterdam.

To my opinion this is the first period in the history of Bijlmer since the mid/late 70's in which the people in Bijlmer can feel themselves taken seriously by the (local) government.
A park like this, the newly built Bijlmerpark Theatre, the new swimming pool, the new residential areas instead of the high rise appartment buidings, Imagine IC, Arena boulevard, the Bijlmer Station, a decent and humane approach to the drug problems, ... too much to mention.

I'm drifting away now from the tour through the park. Here's an impression:

Hans, the man with mad fauna and flora knowledge, explaining us passionately about a 400 year old tree log found in the soil and now a trophy for the park.

The willow island will be one of the few original parts of the park. The freshly painted graffiti in the back will eventually be overgrown by the climbing green little giant.

With the new park, this antique graffiti will disappear... glad I could catch this oldie before it's gone!

Bijlmer weer slecht in het nieuws:

Nogal wat ophef sinds er in de Bijlmer flink wat schietincidenten hebben plaatsgevonden. De politiek staat op z'n achterste benen:

- Elvira Sweet, stadsdeelvoorzitter: er is een bende- oorlog aan de gang

- De SP: er heerst een "holbewonerscultuur" in die enge Bijlmer, slechts op te lossen met werk en gedwongen cursussen.

-Job Cohen: idee sinds deze week om een rechtbank op te zetten in de Bijlmer voor de Bijlmer, zodat meer mensen naar de zittingen komen zodat schietgrage holbewoners uit hun anonimiteit komen te staan.

Zoiets achterlijks heb ik - op "de boel bij elkaar houden" na - van Cohen nog nooit gehoord! Denkt hij echt dat de Bijlmerianen voor sensatie naar de publieke tribune van rechtbankzittingen zullen gaan om te kijken wie er moet voorkomen wegens (vermeend) crimineel gedrag? En dat ze dan door de buurt gaan roddelen wie dat waren zodat die jongens daardoor gedwongen uit hun anonimiteit worden gehaald? En dat die jongens dan hun levens beteren opdat ook zij meedoen met de maatschappij? Voorbeeldburgerschap? Iedereen kan genezen worden van zijn holbewonersmentaliteit?

Ik was zelf laatst in de rechtbank aan de Parnassusweg. De enige mensen die daar rondliepen waren rechters, aanklagers, advocaten en mensen die voor moesten komen evt. bijgestaan door familie. De publieke tribunes waren leeg.

Maar in de Bijlmer zullen ze vast en zeker propvol zitten, de hele dag! Goed idee!

De politiek slaat door in het verzinnen van criminaliteitsbeperkende maatregelen. De overheid denkt alleen in termen als verbieden en controleren. Persoonlijke vrijheid, integriteit en privacy zijn ondergeschikte waarden in de tendens van onze huidige politiek.

Een goed voorbeeld zijn de permanente preventief fouilleer- acties, samen met de FIOD, de Belastingdienst, de IND en de BKR. Want elk mens dat zich in de openbare ruimte bevindt zou wel eens illegaal, belastingdienstfrauderend, draaideurcrimineel en/of wanbetalend kunnen zijn.

In Zuidoost zijn dit soort fouilleer- acties nu al wekelijkse kost. En wordt je de fuik ingesluisd, ben je de pineut: je bent zo een half uur kwijt. De auto wordt technisch gekeurd en binnenstebuiten gekeerd, jij ook, via je BSN-nummer wordt er van alles gechecked en je mag ter plekke betalen als er nog iets open staat. Kun je dat niet: hup, mee naar het bureau.

De fouilleer-acties waren er in den beginne op gericht om wapens en drugs van de straat te halen, maar die werden te weinig gevonden.

Het is een intimiderende manier van controle. Maar niemand komt er tegen in opstand.

Wat gaan de denktankers van de overheid nog meer bedenken? Ik heb nog wel wat gekke ideetjes:

*Camerabewaking met intelligente camera's en vanuit de sateliet

*Drugs- en alcoholtests: je mag je niet meer in de openbare ruimte bevinden als je drugs of alcohol hebt gebruikt.

*Oud en beproefd: de avondklok

Ik vind het een enge ontwikkeling in onze samenleving dat de politiek alleen maar denkt aan beperken van vrijheden.

Ik pleit voor:

Een mentaliteitsverandering bij de overheid in zijn algemeen:

Kinderen en jeugd zijn de toekomst:

Je moet investeringen doen in het onderwijs. In de basis ervan. Dus in het basis- en het middelbaar onderwijs. Daar moet het geld heen. En nieuwe denkwijzen. Elk kind verdiend aandacht! Als het dat thuis niet (genoeg) krijgt: dan moet dat op school!

En elk kind heeft recht op goed onderwijs.

Dat kan alleen als de klassen kleiner zijn (max.18 kids op 1 leerkracht) en er op elke school onderwijsassistenten zijn. Het hele WSNS (weer samen naar school)-beleid moet worden teruggedraaid. Er moet weer geld gepompt wordt in het speciaal onderwijs. Er moet dagelijks gezond eten wordt verstrekt aan schoolgaande kinderen (naar Amerikaans voorbeeld).

Leerkrachten moeten waardig worden beloond.

Dit betekent ruimte maken voor meer scholen of grotere scholen en miljarden investeren.

Daarnaast moet de samenleving stoppen met criminaliseren. Het lijkt wel of de rollen zijn omgedraaid: In een controle wordt je als schuldig en verdacht aangemerkt en als zodanig behandeld tot het tegendeel is bewezen.

Het moet terug naar de oude mentaliteit: onschuldig tot schuld is bewezen.
